Bruce Stannard AM
Author ~ Publisher ~ Maritime Historian ~ Environmentalist Bruce Stannard AM has had a life-long association with maritime heritage and has acquired a special knowledge of the ships of the mid-nineteenth century. Bruce is also a passionate advocate for the recognition and preservation of the marine environment. This website addresses both of his interests. Bruce is a Life Member of the Australian National Maritime Museum. As a Member of the inaugural Council (the governing body) of the Museum and serving as a Council Member for a total of 10 years, Bruce secured for the Museum Norway's Bicentennial Gift to the people of Australia - the gaff-rigged ketch Kathleen Gillett, and New Zealand's Bicentennial Gift -the gaff-cutter Akarana. He also conceived the idea for the Endeavour Replica and was instrumental in raising much of the $17 million for Endeavour's construction. In 1997 Bruce was awarded Membership in the Order of Australia for his work in preserving Australia's maritime heritage. Bruce has also been awarded a Knighthood by the King of Norway, Norway's highest civil honour. Bruce Stannard is the author of 16 books, including the biographies of Jack Earl marine artist, Ben Lexcen the designer of Australia II, and the US America's Cup skipper Dennis Conner, together with the titles Sparkling Sydney and Aboard Endeavour. One of Bruce's best known books was the award-winning Bluewater Bushmen, first published in 1981 and reprinted by Maritime Heritage Press in 2004. In 1982 Bruce was the first Australian journalist to be awarded a Nieman Fellowship to Harvard University.
